An Introduction to the British Antique Dealers’ Association By Carlton Hobbs

Founded in 1918, the British Antique Dealers’ Association (BADA) promotes the highest standards of integrity within the antiques trade. Indeed, the organization only extends invitations to dealers who have demonstrated both their expert knowledge and their ethical business practices. After dealers gain membership in BADA, their memberships still undergo renewal and confirmation each year. Only 400 dealers throughout the United Kingdom maintain membership in this well-respected organization. Headquartered at Rutland Gate in Knightsbridge, London, BADA also employs a network of regional representatives dispersed throughout the country. Additionally, the association offers antiques certification and organizes the BADA Antiques & Fine Art Fair, which takes place each spring at the Duke of York’s Square in London.

About the author: A longtime member of BADA, Carlton Hobbs has bought and sold museum quality art, furniture, and fine home decor for several decades. Through his gallery, Carlton Hobbs, LLC, he carries out in-depth research on the provenance of each piece he purchases. The company was probably the first in the field to establish a full time in-house research department in 1989.
